Nestled within the serene landscapes of the Cilento National Park, near the renowned Amalfi Coast, stands the former Convent of San Francesco in Cuccaro Vetere—a place where history and legend intertwine, offering an unparalleled experience for connoisseurs of culture and luxury.
A Historical Heritage of Inestimable Value
Established in 1333 by the noble Sanseverino family, the Convent of San Francesco stands as a significant testament to the Franciscan presence in the Cilento region. Its construction was authorized by a papal bull from Pope John XXII on November 9, 1320, at the behest of Ilaria di Lauria, widow of Enrico di Sanseverino and daughter of Admiral Ruggiero.
Over the centuries, the convent served as a pivotal spiritual and cultural center, hosting monks devoted to prayer and community service.
The relic of the Holy Wood
Among the most captivating tales associated with the convent is the discovery of a precious relic: a fragment of the True Cross, known as the “Sacred Wood.” According to tradition, a group of monks, during their travels, paused near Cuccaro Vetere to rest their mules laden with sacred furnishings. After their humble meal and devout prayers, they attempted to resume their journey. However, one mule, despite repeated encouragement, remained kneeling in adoration. Suspecting the load was too heavy, the monks unloaded the mule, allowing it additional rest; yet upon departure, the mule repeated its gesture of adoration. Intrigued by the mystery, the monks examined the cargo and, to their astonishment, discovered a relic of the True Cross. Interpreting this as a divine sign, they resolved to establish the convent at that very location.
The presence of the Sacred Wood enhanced the convent’s renown, drawing numerous pilgrims eager to venerate the holy relic. In proximity, a fair emerged, still held today on Good Friday, known as the “Fair of the Sacred Wood.” After the convent fell into ruin, the Sacred Wood was transferred to the Church of San Pietro Apostolo in Cuccaro Vetere, where it remains a focal point of deep veneration, especially during Good Friday processions.
